Entry-Level Drivers

As of February 7, 2022, compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA's) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rule is required for any individual who wants to:

                                                                            Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the first time;

                                                                                  Upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL; or

                                                           Obtain a passenger (P), school bus (S), or hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time.

Under the FMCSA requirements, an entry-level driver must successfully complete a prescribed program of theory and behind-the-wheel instruction before taking the CDL skills test. This training must be provided by an entity listed on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR).

Entry Level Driving Training (ELDT)

Effective February 7, 2022, all individuals who obtain a commercial learner’s permit must  complete a mandatory ELDT course before they'll be permitted to take their CDL skills or knowledge test.   Once you've completed our course, we'll submit your results to the federal Training Provider Registry. CDL Testing centers will retrieve these results to confirm that you have completed the course.

CDL Class A Training

  Are you ready to earn your CDL Class A license?  GCC CDL Training will give you all the knowledge and practice you need our 5 week course includes online instruction and in-depth behind the wheel training.   Our CDL Class A certification course will prepare you to drive a "Class A" truck in any US state.

A Class A CDL is the most common commercial license and is appropriate for operating any number of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds. The GVWR, also known as the gross vehicle mass, is indicated by the manufacturer as the maximum amount of weight a vehicle is allowed to safely carry.

Depending on your endorsements, you might also be able to operate certain Class B and Class C vehicles with a Class A CDL. Examples of vehicles you can operate with a Class A license include livestock carriers, tractor-trailers and passenger vans.  If you are seeking jobs as a professional over-the-road truck driver, a Class A CDL is right for you.

What are the Entry-Level Driver Training regulations?

The ELDT regulations set the minimum Federal requirements for training that entry-level drivers must complete before being permitted to take certain commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills or knowledge tests on or after February 7, 2022.   Who is considered an entry-level driver?   Individuals applying to:

                                                              Obtain a Class A CDL or Class B CDL for the first time;

                                                                 Upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL;

                     Obtain a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time.

The ELDT requirements apply to individuals who obtain a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) on or after February 7, 2022.  The ELDT regulations are not retroactive; individuals who were issued a CDL or an S, P, or H endorsement prior to February 7, 2022 are not required to complete training for the respective CDL or endorsement.

                                                 See below if you are required to complete entry-level driver training:

If: A driver holds a CLP that was issued before February 7, 2022

The driver is not required to complete entry-level driver training, as long as the driver obtains a CDL before the CLP (Commercial Learners Permit) expires.

If: A driver holds a CLP that was issued before February 7, 2022, but the CLP expires before the driver applies for his or her CDL...

The driver must complete the required entry-level driver training.

If: A driver was issued a CDL (Commercial Driver License), or an S. P, or H endorsement before February 7, 2022....

The driver is not required to complete entry-level driver training for the previously-issued license or endorsement, even if it has since lapsed.

A driver obtains a CLP on or after February 7, 2022

The driver must complete the required entry-level driver training.

If:  A driver hold a CDL prior to the compliance date, and applies for an upgrade to a higher class of CDL, or an S, P. or H endorsement for the first time on or after February 7, 2022.

The driver must complete the required entry-level driver training for the class CDL to which the driver is upgrading or the endorsement(s) for which the driver is applying.
